5 tips to build your confidence in choosing kitchen selections.

With this kitchen the client and I looked at all her selections in her home together. This helped her feel confident that the finishes and colours she was considering looked just right before any construction began. We took into consideration her open plan living area, paint colours and existing furniture and fireplace to ensure the finished look was going to be cohesive and flow.

There is so much excitement around choosing kitchen selections. It means you are edging closer to your dream kitchen after all! But with so many options available it can easily become overwhelming.

In this blog I share 5 tips to make things that little bit easier when putting your selections together.

  1. Look at selections in your space.

This may seem like a given but often homeowners make decisions on tile, benchtops and cabinet colours in a show room without seeing the selections in their own home as well. The colour, shine finish and how the selections look all together can change dramatically in a new location.

Ask the showroom if you can take the selection home to view it there, order your own smaller sample to keep or have an interior designer bring their selections to you are all ways to double check how your new kitchen will look your space.

  2. Visualise your kitchen as part of a larger room.

It can be easy to get caught up with all the inspiration images on Pinterest when you are in the concept phase of your new kitchen. Pinterest can be so helpful for communicating a style aesthetic, but often the pins I see from clients are just of a kitchen space which may not tie in with the overall style of their home.

When considering your kitchen selections think about your home as a whole, especially if you have an open plan living area. For your new kitchen to look cohesive in the overall space, choose colours, tones and materials that either already exist in your home or are complementary to the areas that will connect with your new kitchen.

  3. Choose selections in conjunction with your flooring.

Whether you are replacing old flooring as part of a new kitchen renovation or maintaining your current floor, the colour and material of your flooring has a big influence on the interior design of your home. Due to the large surface area of your floor, always choose your kitchen selections with your floor in mind.

Your flooring will either lighten or darken your room and will drive the overall feel of the room your new kitchen will sit in. This is another important reason why you need to see all your kitchen selections in your space (including new flooring if that is the way you are going).

  4. Think about the part each selection will play.

What am I talking about here, an orchestra?! No, what I mean by this is not all of your selections will contribute equally to your new kitchen. The cabinetry colour and finish will play a big part as it takes up a large surface area of your kitchen as it easily seen. Compare this to your splash back, which may contribute less to the overall look depending on the size of your splash back of course. After this will come your bench top which has a big impact when you are looking directly down on it, but not as noticeable when you are viewing the space from further away.

I always suggest placing your selections together in the percentage that they will be used in your kitchen, this will help you understand how much you will see of each choice and how they work together.

  5. Don’t overlook your kitchen furniture & accessories.

Often the items like kitchen stools, pendant lighting, general lighting, artwork, wall clocks and other accessories are an afterthought when it comes to new kitchens. Whilst some of these wouldn’t be classed as kitchen selections as such, always choose them at the same time as your selections (or if you’re not replacing them, place them next to your selections as you make your decisions).

Next time you visit a new kitchen you might be surprised how much you notice all those items I mentioned, they are far from an after thought as they can make or break how cohesive and resolved the new kitchen ends up looking.
